Taming My First Pet as a Dwarf Hunter in the WoW Forever Beta

I'm a level 9 Dwarf Hunter in the WoW Forever beta, and I had one goal: get my first pet. Tame Beast unlocks at level 10, so first I had to level, then do the hunter trainer's taming quest, and then go find a bear of my own. I have never played Beast Mastery before, and I hadn't looked up which pet is better or worse. I just wanted a bear.

About Me and the Torvin Logbook Addon

This is my first video on the channel. I'm a programmer, I haven't been very active in WoW since Mists of Pandaria, and WoW Forever pulled me back in. While playing I started building an addon called Torvin Logbook. It logs what I do: equipped items, character stats, item search across all bags and banks on every character, professions, reputation, rares and gold. It'll be free on CurseForge once I publish it.

Leveling to 10 in Dun Morogh

I needed about 6,100 XP, so I worked through the quests I already had. I've mostly played Horde, so I got lost a fair bit. Here is the order that got me there:

1. Snow leopard prowler. Find Grund and Goswin's camp in the hills to the northwest. I went the wrong way first, came back through the tunnel, and knew I was close when I saw boars. The prowler is high level for the starting area, a party quest really. Everyone there was already grouped, so it took three tries to get the tag.
2. Mostly Dry Firewood. You need 14. Some logs give two. Track Beasts helped me dodge mobs while I searched.
3. A quick detour. A level 13 turn-in with Earthseer Farzan gave some XP. While watching the battle through his far sight I spotted another hunter with a bear, which only made me want one more.
4. Father Gavin at the frozen lake. Hand in the firewood, then kill ten minor ice elementals and collect the rifles of fallen mountaineers. Do them together, which I realised too late. Then kill Avila, an elemental boss, for a ring and 700 XP.
5. The sack of fish. Slay Frosthowl deep in Grizzled Den to the southeast. I hit level 10 inside the cave, then pulled far too much further in and walked out with two health left. I'll go back, maybe with my bear.

Hunter isn't much fun at this low level. You end up standing there slapping things.

The Taming Quest: Boar, Snow Leopard, Ice Claw Bear

At 10 my hunter trainer, Gryff Wildharden, gave me Taming the Beast. You get a taming rod with three charges and use it on three beasts in turn. What I learned:

• If you lose the beast's attention, the tame fails. I set my loaned pet to passive before each try.
• My pet died during the snow leopard attempt and my rod ran out. If that happens, abandon the quest and pick it up again for a fresh rod with three charges.
• Large crag boars are near the start. Snow leopards are up the mountain.
• Ice Claw Bears are on the other side of the road from where I started. Young black bears are mixed in with them, so check the name.

Finding a bear in a busy beta was the hardest part. Turn it in and you learn Tame Beast, Call Pet and Dismiss Pet.

You can't keep the quest bear. I went back for a real one and hit dismiss on the wrong thing (17:37 in the video, you'll hear it). After that I tamed the very same bear I'd had on loan, and this one actually keeps up with me.

Feeding My Pet at the Ironforge Pet Trainer

My new bear was unhappy: 75% damage and losing loyalty. He wants meat, fish, cheese or bread, and I had no way to feed him. The fix is Belia Thundergranite in the Hall of Arms in Ironforge. She teaches Beast Training, Feed Pet and Revive Pet. Food close to your pet's level works better. Mine was level 8, so I gave him a raw steak from crag boars. He still wasn't happy, but we have a bear.
